School Direct

What is the School Direct route into teaching?

School Direct is a school-led route into teaching. It is run by a partnership between a lead school, Nunthorpe Academy, partner schools, Primary & Secondary in the Middlesbrough/Redcar area, and an accredited teacher training provider, Northumbria University. The partnership between these parties is known as the ‘North East Schools Teaching Alliance’.

With this training route, you’ll be based in a school, working hands-on, learning on the job, but you will also be taught by Northumbria University. Trainees are generally spend 4 days a week in the classroom and Friday is a Training day. The school won’t be your employer, and in many ways, your training will be similar to other programmes. School Direct courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and the majority of these training programmes, including this one, also include a PGCE qualification.

The School Direct route offered by the North East Schools Teaching Alliance is not salaried and Tuition Fees do apply (these currently stand at £9,250 for the year). Bursaries/Student Finance may be available, depending on the subject you are training to teach & your personal circumstances. See ‘Fees & Finance’ section.

The course is full-time and runs over 1 academic year (September to June). The subjects which are usually available include:
